Joel Knight, M.D.
D. Joel Knight is a Board Certified Ophthalmologist who founded Eye
Associates of the South in 1986. Dr. Knight’s goal was, and
continues to be, to provide the very best in eye health care and
surgery to the residents of the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
Dr. Knight is a native of Mississippi born in Jackson, MS. He
completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Indiana
with a Degree in Chemistry, graduating with honors. He then went on
to medical school at the University of Mississippi School of
Medicine in Jackson, MS. An internship was completed at San
Francisco General Hospital in San Francisco, California followed by
residency/specialty education in ophthalmology at the University of
Mississippi. Dr. Knight furthered his training by completing a
Vitreoretinal Disease and Surgery Fellowship at the prestigious
Northwestern University of Chicago, IL. Dr. Knight was Board
Certified in 1988.
Dr. Knight has been continously in practice in Biloxi, MS since
1986. He practices general ophthalmology with emphasis on cataract
surgery. Additionally, he is able to deliver specialty expertise in
retinal and vitreal problems. Areas of specialization include
macular degeneration, diabetic retinal disease, retinal detachment,
and vascular diseases of the retina. Dr. Knight is proficient in
retinal laser treatment and the newer modalities of macular
degeneration treatment including Macugen and Avastin.
Dr. Knight’s cataract surgery involves the use of sutureless
cataract surgery using topical or eye drop anesthesia. Dr. Knight
was the first ophthalmologist on the Mississippi Gulf Coast to
utilize the Alcon Restore Presbyopic Intraocular Lens and the
Acrysoft natural tinted lens implant.
While Dr. Knight is available for consultation on referral from
other ophthalmologists and other physicians, he is also available
for routine eye exams. Dr. Knight is a Fellow of the American
Academy of Ophthalmology as well as a member of the American Society
for Cataract and Referactive Surgery.
Dr. Knight is active in local community activities and
organizations. He is also actively involved in First Presbyterian
Church of Ocean Springs. He currently resides in Ocean Springs, MS
with his wife, Sandra, and two sons, Stewart and Spencer.
