Joel Knight, M.D.

Joel Knight, M.D. is a board certified ophthalmologist who founded Eye Associates of the South. He practices general ophthalmology, specializing in cataract surgery with an emphasis in retinal disease.

Since founding our practice in 1986, Dr. Knight's goal was – and continues to be – to provide the very best eye care and surgery to residents of the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

A native of Jackson, Miss., Dr. Knight completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Indiana with a Degree in Chemistry, graduating with honors. He then earned his medical degree at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in Jackson. He completed his internship at San Francisco General Hospital in California, followed by residency/specialty education in ophthalmology at the University of Mississippi. His post-graduate studies included graduating from Harvard University's Basic Science of Ophthalmology Program in 1982, specializing in ophthalmology. He also completed a Vitreoretinal Disease and Surgery Fellowship at the prestigious Northwestern University in Chicago. Dr. Knight was Board Certified in 1988.

Dr. Knight has been continuously in practice in Biloxi since 1986. In addition to practicing general ophthalmology, specializing in cataract surgery with an emphasis in retinal disease, he offers specialty expertise in: retinal and vitreal problems, macular degeneration, diabetic retinal disease, retinal detachment, and vascular diseases of the retina. He is proficient in retinal laser treatment and the newer modalities of macular degeneration treatment including Avastin and/or Eylea injections. His treatments also may include steroid injections for ocular inflammatory problems and Jetrea injections for vitreomacular traction.

Dr. Knight performs sutureless cataract surgery using topical or eye drop anesthesia. He was the first ophthalmologist on the Mississippi Gulf Coast to use the Alcon Restore Presbyopic Intraocular Lens and the Acrysoft natural tinted lens implant. Each cataract Surgery involves placement of a lens implant. The sophistication in implants has evolved dramatically in the past several years. There are bifocal lens implants, implants for astigmatism, tinted lens implants, telescopic implants for macular degeneration and, of course, standard single-vision implants.

He also the first ophthalmologist on the Mississippi Gulf Coast to utilize dropless cataract surgery; it replaces the need for antibiotics, steroids, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory eye drops before or after cataract surgery.

While Dr. Knight is available for consultation on referral from other ophthalmologists and other physicians, he is also available for routine eye exams. Dr. Knight is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology as well as a member of the American Society for Cataract & Refractive Surgery.

He recently was honored with the Patients' Choice Award, based on patients' online voting concerning physicians' quality of care and service. Patients also chose him to receive the On-Time Physician Award. He also won the Top Doctor Award from Castle Connolly, a national group.

He is active in community programs and organizations, including the First Presbyterian Church of Ocean Springs. He often donates his time to provide free eye care to underprivileged patients in foreign countries, by traveling on mission project for the First Presbyterian Church. He resides in Ocean Springs with his wife, Sandra, and two sons, Stewart and Spencer.
